The Advisor of Studies sits at the connection point between teaching and learning programme administration and student support, and is primarily a 'signposting' role. However, as first point of contact for students with problems, advising may involve responsibilities less easy to define but which have an important bearing on the overall student experience. Here, Dr Steve Reynolds will examine some of these roles and responsibilities , and ask whether advisors and the way in which they operate in Universities best serve students' present and future needs.
